Maytag Dryer AF Error Code

VERIFIED

Error code AF
Appliance Dryer

Why the dryer says AF

The letters AF stand for Restricted Air Flow. Maytag ties the message to a lint screen or vent that is clogged. The vent itself might also be crushed or kinked, or it might wind through more turns than it should.

The dryer does not shut down over this. Pressing any key dismisses the AF message, and the display falls back to the estimated time remaining.

Five things to check

  • The lint screen: empty it and clean it.
  • The vent between the back of the dryer and the wall: look for crushing or kinks.
  • That same stretch: make sure no lint or debris is sitting in it.
  • The exhaust hood outside: it should be free of lint and debris too.
  • The layout as a whole: compare the run length and the number of elbows against what the Installation Instructions recommend for your vent type.

Test after the checks

Restart the dryer on a Timed Dry cycle with heat. If AF is still displayed, Maytag says to bring in a venting specialist to clean the whole venting run of the home.

Other dryer codes

  • E1: a separate dryer code that has only a reset routine.
  • 6E: another entry in the same dryer code list, again without a cause.

Maytag dryer repair for San Francisco homes

If AF hangs on once the lint screen and vent are clear, call (415) 649-2156 for a technician visit through Maytag dryer repair. Tell us the code, your model number, and which of the five checks you finished.

Model compatibility: Maytag reuses codes across series and model years, so AF may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
