Airflow is restricted
Maytag calls F4 E3 a Restricted Air Flow code, caused by a clogged lint screen or vent. The vent may also be crushed or kinked, or run with too many turns. In Maytag’s list of dryer codes the same message is shown as AF, and both household and commercial dryers carry it.
Drying continues while the message is up. A touch of any key removes it and shows the estimated time remaining again.
Vent checklist
- Clean the lint screen.
- Look along the vent from dryer to wall for crushed or kinked sections.
- Take lint and debris out of that run.
- Do the same for the exterior exhaust hood.
- Check the run length and the number of elbows against the Installation Instructions for your vent type.
- Pick a Timed Dry heated cycle and restart.
If the message will not go away, have the whole home venting run cleaned; Maytag says to contact a venting specialist.
Long dry times and venting
When a dryer heats yet takes a long time to dry, the likeliest culprit is a vent problem or restricted air flow. Maytag advises cleaning the venting from the dryer to the outdoors every 1 to 2 years, or sooner if drying performance drops. A professional vent cleaning service can check the run for obstructions too.

Model compatibility: Maytag reuses codes across series and model years, so F4 E3 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
