F7 E1 means the washer is having trouble with motor speed. Maytag words the code differently for the two designs, and the owner checks belong to front loaders.
What each design is saying
- A front load Maytag is reporting a motor speed sensing error, which means the motor cannot achieve the speed the selected cycle needs.
- A top load Maytag is getting no usable tachometer reading (the basket speed signal is absent or incorrect), leaving the control unable to tell how fast the motor turns.
Front load checks, in order
- Shipping bolts. Four bolts and four plastic spacers are fitted at the rear for transport and must be taken out before the washer is used. If they are left in, you may hear noise, feel vibration or see error codes. The installation instructions show how to remove them.
- Load size. An overloaded drum can trigger the code, so cut the load down.
- Clear the display. Press Pause or Cancel two times, then Power once.
Power reset for either design
Disconnect the washer for five minutes, reconnect it, choose your cycle again and press Start. On top load models this reset is the only owner step Maytag lists.
Related motor and drive codes
- F7 E2 is a drive failure, an MCI problem inside the motor or the control hardware.
- F7 E7 means the motor could not get up to its target RPM.
- F7 E9 is a locked rotor.
- F7 E0 is listed with reset steps only.
Maytag washer service in San Francisco
If bolts, load and reset change nothing, a technician can test the motor speed circuit. Call (415) 649-2156 in San Francisco or elsewhere in the Bay Area, and report F7 E1, front or top load, the model number and the checks done. Read about Maytag washer repair before you ring.
Model compatibility: Maytag reuses codes across series and model years, so F7 E1 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
