OFb (sometimes written ofb) means a top load Maytag washer found its load off balance. On Maytag’s summary table the washer runs a load-balance correction routine and should be left to continue; when that automatic attempt does not succeed, the clothes have to be spread evenly around the washplate by hand.
Case 1: the cycle can still be paused
- Press Start to pause.
- Open the lid and move the clothing around, or reduce the load.
- Press Start again to continue.
Case 2: the error is already showing
- Stop the cycle with Start or by pulling the power cord.
- If water is sitting in the tub, run a drain-only cycle.
- Rearrange the clothes or take some out so the load is level and not overfilled. The Bulky or Heavy Duty cycle is worth trying for the new load.
- If all you need is the water removed, run Drain & Spin after the rearranging.
Loading habits that prevent it
- Place items in loose heaps, spread evenly.
- Remember that wet items or extra water can throw the washer off balance.
- Pair a single heavy piece, such as a rug or a jeans jacket, with a few towels.
- Wash oversized, nonabsorbent items like comforters or poly-filled jackets on the Bulky/Sheets Deep Water Wash cycle.
Related codes
- F0 E5: an off-balance load detected.
- F0 E3: overload, the load exceeds washer capacity.
- F0E9: off-balance condition after user interventions.
San Francisco washer service for repeat imbalance
If OFb keeps coming back even with a well-spread load, a technician can take a look. Maytag washer repair covers San Francisco and the Bay Area; call (415) 649-2156 with the model number and a description of the loads that triggered it.
Model compatibility: Maytag reuses codes across series and model years, so OFb / ofb may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
