About this model

Model overview

The MGC7430DS is a 30-inch gas cooktop in Maytag’s Power burner line, and it is still sold new. On a gas top the questions are simple to state: is gas reaching the burner, is something igniting it, and does the flame look right. Our Maytag cooktop repair page covers the category, and the Maytag cooktops guide lists the rest of the lineup.

The one rule that comes before everything

If you smell gas, do not touch a light switch, a phone charger or anything electrical. Leave the home, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Only after the all-clear do we get involved. Please do not loosen fittings or test connections yourself; that is work for a technician.

Common complaints on a 30-inch gas top

A burner that clicks but does not light, a burner that lights unevenly, a flame that lifts or looks ragged, and an igniter that keeps clicking after the flame is already on are the usual reports. Most trace to a dirty burner head, a misseated burner cap, a spark electrode fouled by boil-over, or a switch that is wet. Older Bay Area buildings add one more variable, because the gas line and shutoff to the cooktop may be original to the unit, and we look at how it is connected before blaming the burner.

We cover the deeper logic in our post on a gas burner that will not light.

Checks that stay on the surface

  • Make sure each burner cap and head sits flat and fully seated.
  • Dry the burner area if a pot boiled over; a damp igniter will keep clicking.
  • Confirm the gas valve to the cooktop is in its normal position, only if you can see it without moving anything.
  • Use a different burner to see whether the trouble is one burner or all of them.

Do not poke the igniter, pick at ports with sharp tools or run a burner that smells of gas.

Which model number goes on the booking

MGC7430DS is the number to quote. The wider MGC7536DS shares the line but is a 36-inch unit with its own parts, so a match by appearance is not enough. If you cannot read the label, how to find your Maytag model number lists the typical places to look.

On the day

The visit starts with a gas safety check, then a look at each burner, igniter and control. You receive a written estimate after the diagnosis, and no part is changed until you approve the work. If the fault is the gas supply side of the installation, we explain what is involved before anything starts.
