Maytag Gas Burner Won’t Light: Causes and Safe Checks
You hear the click but see no flame, or a burner lights only after a long wait. See what a clogged port, a wet cap or a weak spark module usually means on a Maytag gas range.

The spark clicks like a ticking clock, nothing catches, and dinner is on hold. A gas burner that will not light is one of the more worrying kitchen faults because it involves fuel, so the first rule is simple: if you smell gas at any point, do not touch a switch or a lighter. Leave the home and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
How a gas burner lights
When you turn a knob, the switch inside it does two jobs. It opens the valve so gas can reach the burner, and it sends a signal to a spark module that fires the electrode beside the burner head. Gas, air and spark have to meet at the right place. If any one of the three is missing, you get clicking with no flame, a flame on only part of the ring, or a delay that ends with a puff.
The most common cause: dirt and moisture
In a busy kitchen, a boil-over is all it takes. Sugary or greasy liquid runs into the burner ports and bakes on, or soaks the spark electrode so the current leaks instead of jumping the gap. Cleaning with a wet cloth or a spray bottle around the burner can leave water in the ports. A burner that works after a few hours of drying was probably wet, not broken.
Check that the burner cap sits flat and that the base is seated in its notch. A cap that is slightly rotated, or a head that has been lifted for cleaning and dropped back misaligned, will click and never light. This is the quickest check in the whole article and the one most often missed.
When the spark is the problem
With the burner removed from the picture, look at the spark itself. All burners clicking at once while only one fails points to that burner’s electrode. One continuous click on every burner, even after one lights, is a known sign of a wet or dirty electrode or a switch that is sticking. If none of the burners spark, the module, the switch wiring or the power to the range comes into question. On a range with electronic ignition, the clock and display often go on working when the module has failed, which can mislead you into thinking the power is fine.
When the gas is the problem
If the spark looks good and the burner still will not catch, the issue is gas flow: a plugged port, a bent or blocked orifice, a regulator problem or a supply valve that is partly closed. Do not try to sort this out with a pin or a wire, because enlarging a port changes the flame. Ranges installed behind a tight cabinet gap are also prone to a gas flex that has been kinked when the range was pushed back, and that is a repair for a qualified technician.
What to expect on specific Maytag ranges and cooktops
The Maytag MGR6600FZ repair page covers a 30″ gas range with a fifth oval burner. The Maytag MGR8800FZ repair page covers a 30″ gas range with true convection that is no longer sold new. For gas cooktops, the Maytag MGC7430DS repair page describes a 30″ unit with a power burner, and the Maytag MGC7536DS repair page a 36″ one. The oval burner and the power burner are bigger than the standard ones and are the most likely to hold spilled food around the head, so slow lighting there is worth cleaning first. Safe checks in order
- Turn every knob off and let the burners cool. Air the kitchen out if you are unsure about an odor.
- Lift off the cap and head, wipe them, and let them dry fully before putting them back.
- Seat the head in its notch and the cap on top, flat and not rocking.
- Wipe the electrode tip gently with a dry cloth; it should be clean and dry.
- Look at the burner ports. Debris you can brush away with a soft brush is fine to remove; do not poke the holes with a pin.
- Check the gas valve handle behind or beside the range is in line with the pipe, and the range breaker or outlet has power.
- Try one controlled power reset and test the burner again.
What not to do
- Do not hold a match or lighter to a burner that is clicking. A built-up pocket of gas can flash.
- Do not loosen, tighten or test any gas fitting.
- Do not disassemble the control knobs or the switch panel.
- Do not cover the burner with a pan to make it “catch”.
When to book a visit
Book when the burner still will not light after cleaning and drying, when one burner clicks forever, when the flame is yellow or lifts off the burner, or when several burners fail at once. A diagnosis comes first, a written estimate follows, and nothing is repaired until you approve it. See Maytag range repair for the range service or Maytag ranges for the lineup. If the oven side is also out, read Maytag oven not heating.
Notes for rentals and shared buildings
In rentals the gas shutoff may sit in a closet, behind a drawer or at the meter, and tenants often do not know where. Find it before you need it. Property managers who find a repeated burner complaint across several units are often looking at the same cause, such as cleaning habits or a shared module type, so a note of the model number from each unit helps.
Frequently asked questions
The spark is working but gas, air and spark are not meeting. A wet or dirty electrode, a misplaced burner cap and clogged ports are the usual causes.
Not when it keeps clicking without a flame, because gas can collect. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Usually moisture, food residue or a sticking switch. Let the burners dry and clean around the heads, and call if it continues.
No. Enlarging or damaging a port changes the flame. Use a soft brush only and let a technician handle persistent blockage.
The principle is identical: a valve, a spark module and an electrode per burner. Large burners tend to collect spills, so cleanliness matters more there.
