How to Find Your Maytag Model Number on Any Appliance

A model number decides which part fits, which code list applies and whether a repair is even possible. Here is where Maytag keeps the label on each appliance type, and how to photograph it.

How to Find Your Maytag Model Number on Any Appliance

When you call about a broken appliance, the first thing a technician asks for is the model number. It decides which parts exist for your unit, which codes apply to it and whether the fault you describe is one that model is known for. The label is usually printed on a small plate or sticker, and it is almost never on the front panel, where most people look first.

What you are looking for

A data plate carries a model number, a serial number, and electrical or gas details. Write down the model number exactly, with every letter and digit, and take a photo of the whole plate so nothing is lost. Do not try to decode the letters yourself or guess a number from a nearby model; one character off can mean a different part. Examples of model numbers on our site include the Maytag MVW7230HW repair page for a washer and the Maytag MED7230HW repair page for a dryer.

Refrigerators

The label is usually on an inside wall of the fresh-food compartment, often on the upper left or right side near the shelves, or on the door frame. French-door and side-by-side units may have it behind a crisper or on the ceiling of the compartment. In a built-in alcove, you may have to pull a shelf to see it. See Maytag refrigerator repair and the lineup at Maytag refrigerators.

Washers

On a top-load washer, the plate is usually under the lid, on the cabinet edge or inside the lid rim. On a front-load washer, look on the door opening rim, behind the door, or on the front of the cabinet beside the door. In stacked closets, open the door fully and use a phone flashlight. The service is on Maytag washer repair, and the lineup on Maytag washers.

Dryers

Open the dryer door and look around the door opening, on the frame, or on the inside of the door itself. Some dryers carry it on the back panel, which is hard to reach in a closet or garage. Gas and electric dryers can look identical, so the label also tells you which you own. See Maytag dryer repair and Maytag dryers.

Dishwashers

Open the door and check the side edge of the tub or the top edge of the inner door panel. On some dishwashers it is on the left or right side of the door frame, visible only when the door is open. Slide the lower rack out if it blocks the view. See Maytag dishwasher repair.

Ranges, wall ovens and cooktops

On a freestanding range, open the oven door and look at the frame around the opening, or at the edge of the storage drawer. On a wall oven, check the door frame and the side edge of the cavity opening. Cooktops often carry the plate on the underside, which is hard to see once installed, so look for a copy in the manual or on the front edge of the frame. Details are on Maytag range repair, Maytag wall oven repair and Maytag cooktop repair.

Microwaves

An over-the-range microwave usually has the plate inside the door frame, on the cavity wall, or on the side of the unit. Open the door fully, since the label is often hidden behind the door when it is closed. See Maytag microwave repair.

Tips for getting a readable photo

  • Use your phone flashlight at an angle to avoid glare on glossy labels.
  • Wipe the plate lightly with a dry cloth if grease obscures it.
  • Take one close photo of the model number and one wider photo showing where the plate sits.
  • Photograph the code on the display at the same time, if there is one.

If the label is missing or faded

Labels peel off in humid garages, wear away behind a laundry door, or get painted over after a rental turnover. Look for a duplicate in the paperwork that came with the unit, a sticker on the packing box if you kept it, or an email receipt. If nothing turns up, photograph the appliance from the front, the controls and the inside; a technician can often identify the generation from the design and confirm the number on arrival.

Landlords and property managers

If you manage several units, keep a simple record with the unit number, the appliance type and the model number, and add a photo of each plate when a unit is turned over. When a tenant reports a fault, you can send the record along with the request. It saves the tenant from hunting for a label, and it shows when a building has several generations of the same appliance type.

Safe ways to look

Do not pull appliances out on your own if they are heavy or connected to gas. Dryers on gas lines and ranges on gas flex hoses should not be moved without a technician. If a unit needs to be moved to reach a label, power and gas stay connected and the move can strain the supply. Looking inside a door or lid is enough in most cases.

Why this saves a visit

A technician arriving with the right part type for your exact unit is the difference between one visit and two. Rental managers with several units can keep a short list of model numbers, one per apartment. We begin with a diagnosis, give a written estimate and make no repair without your approval. Browse the full list on our models page or look up codes on the error codes page. For repair-or-replace decisions, read repair or replace a Maytag appliance.
