Maytag Wall Ovens

Built into the cabinet, serviced in the kitchen: single and double ovens with door, sensor and control faults.

At a glance

Overview

Built-in ovens are the quiet workhorses of a remodeled kitchen, and in the Bay Area they turn up in condos, newer in-law units and houses with updated kitchens. Because a wall oven is set into a cabinet cutout, it is harder to reach and harder to replace than a freestanding range. Faults tend to show up as codes, a door that will not unlock, or temperatures that drift. Our Maytag wall oven repair visits begin with a diagnosis, then a written estimate, and no work proceeds without your approval.

Single and double models

Four Maytag wall ovens are in our reference list, all with true convection.

  • MEW9527FZ: a single wall oven, 27″, 4.3 cu ft.
  • MEW9530FZ: a single wall oven, 30″, 5.0 cu ft.
  • MEW9627FZ: a double wall oven, 27″, 8.6 cu ft.
  • MEW9630FZ: a double wall oven, 30″, 10.0 cu ft.

The two widths use different cutouts, so a 27″ oven cannot simply be exchanged for a 30″ one without carpentry.

Locating the model number

The label is usually on the oven frame, visible when the door is open, or along the edge of a drawer or lower opening. On a double oven, check both the upper and lower cavity frames, and photograph what you find.

Frequent complaints

Door that will not unlock

After a clean cycle the lock motor and its switches have to agree on door position before the oven releases. Our article on a wall oven door that stays locked describes what you can check without opening anything.

Temperature drift

A sensor that reads incorrectly or a control that cannot compare actual and set temperature shifts results in a way the display does not reveal. In a double oven, the upper and lower cavities have separate sensors, which helps the technician isolate which side is at fault.

Cooling fan noise or shutdowns

Built-in ovens depend on airflow to keep the cabinet cool. A fan that fails, or an airflow restriction around the cutout, may produce a code or an early shutoff.

Unresponsive touch panel

Blank or erratic panels may come from the user interface, the control or the wire between them.

Reading the codes

Many wall oven codes have stated meanings in our list. Samples: 1c31 points toward the oven control or its wiring. 4d11 refers to the door latch assembly, door switch or wiring. F3 E0 points toward the upper oven temperature sensor. F8 E0 points toward an airflow restriction or the upper oven cooling fan. F9 most often indicates wiring at the home electrical supply or hard-wire connection. See the full wall oven error codes guide for more.

Some combination models carry codes that mention a microwave, such as F1 E5, which refers to the microwave inverter, magnetron tube or wiring. If your unit has no microwave section, a technician will tell you what the code does or does not mean for it.

Safe checks before you call

  1. Note the code and which cavity it relates to.
  2. Check the breaker. Wall ovens are hard-wired, so there is no plug to inspect.
  3. Close the door fully and make sure nothing sits in the gasket.
  4. Let a locked oven cool completely before testing the door.
  5. Perform one controlled power reset at the breaker.

Do not remove the oven from its cabinet, open panels, or test live circuits. Burning smells or sparks mean the breaker goes off straight away.

Cutout and installation notes

Because a wall oven is fixed in a cutout, a technician checks ventilation behind and under it, the junction connection and the door clearance. Stacked arrangements, with a microwave or warming drawer above, can limit airflow and complicate access.
