About this model

Model overview

The MEW9630FZ is the 30-inch double in Maytag’s wall oven lineup, listed at 10.0 cu ft with true convection, and still sold new. It is a hard-working appliance in a family kitchen, particularly around holidays when both cavities run together. Our Maytag wall oven repair page and the Maytag wall ovens guide give the wider background.

What owners tell us

The calls we take on a double oven are rarely about a total failure. More often one cavity runs cooler than it says, the upper oven preheats but does not hold temperature, a convection fan makes a new noise, the door lock stays engaged, or a connected-appliance Wi-Fi code appears and will not clear. Because both ovens use the same control, a clean diagnosis separates a control problem from a cavity problem.

Reading what the display says

Several codes apply here. F1 points to an oven temperature sensor or control, F6 E6 refers to the upper oven appliance manager control, and F6 E9 refers to the lower one. FC E1 is a connected-appliance Wi-Fi problem, so a router change can matter. Write down the exact sequence.

Installation points that change the diagnosis

A double oven is heavy, and it is usually fitted in a tall cabinet column. In Bay Area homes that have been remodeled, the column sometimes has little clearance at the sides and rear, and the cooling air path can be partly blocked. We check that path early, as heat that cannot leave a cavity can mimic a failed part.

Checks that are safe to try

  1. Turn both ovens off and use one controlled power reset at the breaker.
  2. Look at the router if the code is a Wi-Fi one; the oven itself may be fine.
  3. Check that the door closes squarely.
  4. Keep the front vents clear and the cabinet empty above and below.

Never open the cabinet or bypass a latch. Burning smell or sparks means breaker off.

Telling the numbers apart

The MEW9627FZ is the 27-inch double, while singles are the MEW9527FZ and MEW9530FZ. We take the number straight from the label; how to find your Maytag model number shows the usual places. For heat trouble, see our post on an oven not heating.
