F5 E1 is tied to whatever tells the washer that it is shut. Which part that is depends on the design: a door switch on front loaders, a lid switch on top loaders.
If your washer loads from the front
The control might not be registering a shut door. Press the door all the way closed, then look around the switch for obstructions; Maytag’s examples are laundry and leftover shipping materials.
If your washer loads from the top
The fault concerns the lid switch, and it comes up in two situations: the lid lock is engaged yet the switch still reads open, or START was pressed with the lid up. Maytag’s advice mirrors the front load one. Make sure the lid is fully down and that no garment or packing material is wedged near the switch.
Power reset
If a properly closed door or lid changes nothing, remove power for 5 minutes. Unplug the washer, wait, plug it in again, and see what the display says.

- F5 E4 appears after three cycles in a row without the door being opened.
- F5E2 is a lid lock fault on top load models.
Maytag washer service in San Francisco
Should F5 E1 come back, a technician can check the switch. Call (415) 649-2156 from anywhere in San Francisco or the Bay Area and say whether the washer is front or top load, give the model number, and add that you reset the power. More is on our Maytag washer repair page.
Model compatibility: Maytag reuses codes across series and model years, so F5 E1 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
