Maytag Range Repair in San Francisco

When the oven stays cold or a burner will not catch, the cause is usually in the sensor, igniter, element or supply.

At a glance

Overview

The range is where a household’s day usually starts and ends, so when the oven stays cold at suppertime or a burner clicks without lighting, it gets noticed quickly. We repair Maytag electric and gas ranges across San Francisco and the Bay Area, in everything from tight galley kitchens in Victorian flats to renovated open plans in Peninsula and East Bay houses. The notes below describe how we approach the common faults and what you can check from the outside before we arrive.

The oven will not heat, or heats the wrong amount

An electric oven bakes with a lower element and broils with an upper one, and each is switched by relays on the control board. When one stops glowing, the cause is often the element itself, a connection that has burned at its terminal or a relay that no longer closes. A gas oven works differently: an igniter must draw enough current to open the gas valve, and a weak igniter that glows without opening the valve is a classic failure. Our guide to a Maytag oven not heating compares both cases.

When the oven heats but the temperature is wrong, food burns on the edges or cooks slowly. The oven sensor tells the control how hot the cavity is, and a drifting sensor leads to a drifting oven. Door gaskets that have flattened over the years let heat out, and a convection fan that has stopped moving air spreads the heat unevenly. If this sounds familiar, read about a Maytag oven temperature that is off.

Burners that click, glow slowly or will not light

On a gas range, burners need a clean port, a dry cap seated correctly and a spark at the right moment. Boil-overs and cleaning sprays are the usual culprits, because moisture or residue on the igniter keeps it from sparking. When one burner clicks forever while the others work, the burner head or its spark module is the likely area. When all burners fail together, the supply or a shared switch becomes the question. Our article on a Maytag gas burner that won’t light shows the sequence.

On an electric range, a surface element that stays cold may be a burnt receptacle, a failed infinite switch or the element’s own coil. We test each rather than guess, because swapping the element when the receptacle is the problem simply burns the new coil.

Panels that stay dark or ignore your touch

An electronic control that goes blank, beeps without cause or shows a constant error is usually a sign of one of three things: a supply problem at the range, a stuck key on the keypad or a control board failure. We confirm the supply first, because a range that is wired incorrectly or fed through a worn receptacle will behave strangely until that is fixed.

Fault codes and what they mean

Maytag ranges show codes that start with F, a number and sometimes an E, and there are dozens. Here are the ones that owners most often ask about, with the meaning given there.

Many other codes point at the oven control, the keypad, the door latch assembly or a sensor, and the code meaning often says only that a component or its wiring may be at fault. That wording is a pointer, not a diagnosis, which is why we confirm with tests. The full set is explained in Maytag range error codes.

What the installation tells us

A range sits in a place that quietly affects how it fails. In Bay Area kitchens, a freestanding range often slides into a cutout beside a refrigerator with only a hair of clearance, and a gap that is too tight traps heat on the side walls. The anti-tip bracket must be engaged at the rear, because a range that can tilt forward is dangerous, and we check it whenever a range has been moved or pulled out for service.

Gas ranges need a shutoff valve within reach, a flexible connector that is not kinked behind the unit, and a regulator that matches the fuel. After an earthquake, a move or a kitchen renovation, the connector deserves a look. Electric ranges draw a large circuit, and older buildings sometimes have receptacles that have been browned by years of load. If an outlet shows discoloration, stop using that range until it has been looked at.

What you can safely check

  1. Look at the breaker, resetting it once if it has tripped. An electric range often uses a double breaker, and one half can drop while the other looks fine.
  2. For a gas range, confirm the gas valve behind or beside the unit is in the open position, in line with the pipe.
  3. Close the oven door firmly and check that the gasket is not folded or torn.
  4. Wipe food residue from burner caps and ports on a cold range, and make sure the caps are seated flat.
  5. Write down the code and what you were doing when it appeared, then do one controlled power reset at the breaker.

If you smell gas, leave at once, avoid switches and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. If you smell burning or see sparks, switch the range off at the breaker. Never pull off panels, test live circuits, bypass a door switch or touch gas fittings.

Why we ask for the model number

Sensors, elements, latches and control boards vary between range generations, and a control for the wrong model may not agree with the keypad. The label is usually on the oven frame or the drawer front edge, and our guide on how to find your Maytag model number helps. We work on models such as MER6600FZ, an electric range, and MGR6600FZ, a gas range with a fifth oval burner. The older MGR8800FZ is no longer sold new, and we can still diagnose it.

How a visit works

We listen to what the range did, then inspect the supply, the door, the sensor and the heat source before disassembling anything. You hear what is wrong and receive a written estimate before work starts, and nothing is repaired without your approval. Our Maytag ranges guide describes the lineup in more detail, and a Maytag cooktop repair visit is the better fit when only a separate cooktop is involved.
