Maytag Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes Properly
Gritty glasses, cloudy film and food left on plates have specific causes in a Maytag dishwasher. Work out whether it is the spray, the filter, the detergent or the water supply.

A dishwasher can run a complete cycle, sound normal, finish with a clean beep, and still leave a mess. What you find on the dishes matters. Gritty residue on glasses, cloudy film, food baked onto the top rack, or one rack that comes out clean while the other does not are different symptoms with different causes. Match yours to the list before you reach for the rinse aid or the phone.
Match the symptom
Grit and tiny particles on everything suggest the filter is dirty or that wash water is being circulated with debris in it. A white chalky film on glassware is usually mineral buildup or too much detergent for the water. Food stuck on plates in one section points to a spray arm that is blocked or not turning. Dishes that are clean on top but dirty below, or the reverse, suggest water pressure or arm problems. Dishes that are wet and warm but never really washed may mean the wash motor is struggling, or that the machine is not filling enough.
Causes, from simplest to hardest
- Clogged filter. Food debris builds up in the filter area and recirculates. This is the leading cause of gritty dishes.
- Blocked spray arm holes. Seeds, labels, or hard-water scale plug the small openings, so the water cannot reach the dishes.
- Arm that will not spin. A dish, a utensil or a tall item hitting the arm stops it, leaving dry spots.
- Loading problems. Nested bowls, big pans in front of the dispenser and crowded racks block spray from reaching the surfaces.
- Detergent issues. Old detergent, the wrong type, too little or too much can all leave residue. The dispenser door may also fail to open on time.
- Low water supply. If the fill is short, the pump moves air with the water, and the spray is weak. A partly closed supply valve, a kinked line, or a weak inlet valve can cause this. Maytag lists F8E1 for inlet water trouble on some units.
- Water not hot enough. The incoming water or the dishwasher’s heating system may be failing; F4E2 is listed for a heater problem on some models.
- Wash motor or pump weakness. A tired wash motor fails to build pressure.
Checks to make at home
Start with the filter. Pull the bottom rack, lift out the filter, rinse it under running water and use a soft brush on the mesh. Replace it firmly, since a filter that is not locked in lets debris past. Next, spin the spray arms by hand. They should turn freely and not wobble. Hold each one up to the light and clear any visible holes with a toothpick. Do not use metal wire that can scratch the arm.
Run a load with less crowding, scrape large scraps off plates without pre-rinsing everything, and use fresh detergent in the dispenser. Many people over-rinse, which leaves the detergent nothing to work on. Check that the kitchen faucet runs hot before starting the cycle, since a long distance to a water heater in a basement or garage leaves the first water lukewarm. Let the tap run until hot water arrives and then start the dishwasher.
Check the supply valve under the sink and make sure it is fully open. Glance at the inlet hose for kinks. Run a cycle and listen for the fill: water should come in for a noticeable time, not a quick spurt. If you hear a dull pump with little fill, the supply is suspect.
What not to do
Do not add extra detergent hoping to overcome the problem; it creates suds and more residue. Do not pour vinegar and baking soda in a pile in the tub expecting a miracle. Do not remove the lower kick plate and test the motor while the power is on. And do not wash items the manufacturer says to hand wash, which can leave film and damage seals.
Installation and household factors
Hard water is common in parts of the Bay Area, and it leaves a film on glasses and scale inside the spray arms. A dishwasher installed at the far end of a long pipe run from the water heater gets cold water at the start of a cycle. In small flats the unit may share a wall with the range, and radiated heat is rarely the issue, but a supply line pinched against a cabinet side can be. If the machine was moved or reconnected during a renovation, we check the inlet and drain connections too. A drain loop that sags can let dirty water siphon back into the tub, which reads as a cleaning failure.
The model and what it affects
Different Maytag dishwashers use different filter systems and spray arrangements. The label is typically on the tub rim or the door edge, and our model-number guide shows the usual spots. A 24-inch unit like the Maytag MDB8959SKZ, listed with a third rack, has a spray layout that differs from a model without one, and the Maytag MDB4949SKZ has front controls instead of top controls. That is why we ask for the model before suggesting a fix.
Deciding to call
If the filter is clean, the arms spin, the supply is open and the dishes still come out dirty, book a diagnosis. We check the fill, the heat, the spray pressure and the dispenser, tell you what we find, and give you a written estimate. Nothing is repaired without your approval. For more, see Maytag dishwasher repair and Maytag dishwashers. If water pools in the tub afterward, see Maytag dishwasher not draining.
Frequently asked questions
Mineral film from hard water or too much detergent is the usual reason. A rinse aid and the right detergent amount often help.
Scrape off large food, but leave light soil. The detergent needs something to work on.
The lower arm may be blocked, or the lower spray may be weak due to a clogged filter or low water level.
Yes. A clogged filter recirculates debris onto dishes and is the most common reason for gritty results.
Often the cause is a small part or a simple maintenance item, and we explain the options in the written estimate before you decide.
