Maytag Gas Dryer Not Igniting: Igniter, Valve and Safety Checks

A Maytag gas dryer that tumbles but never lights may have a weak igniter, valve coils, a closed shutoff or a vent that trips a safety device. Safe checks inside.

Maytag Gas Dryer Not Igniting: Igniter, Valve and Safety Checks

A gas dryer that spins but never warms up is waiting for a flame that does not come. Unlike an electric dryer, which simply needs power at a coil, a gas dryer has to complete a short sequence every time: it must prove the airflow is there, glow an igniter, open the gas valve and confirm the flame. If any one step fails, the clothes tumble cold. It is a sequence that is easy to describe and not safe to test by hand.

Safety comes first

If you smell gas near the dryer, do not run it, do not flip any switch or unplug anything, and leave the home. Call the gas utility or 911 from outside. If you only suspect something because the dryer will not light, you can keep calm: a dryer that fails to ignite shuts the gas off by design. What matters is not to attempt a workaround. Do not touch gas fittings, do not loosen the flexible gas line and do not try to light anything manually.

How a gas dryer lights

When you start a heated cycle, the drum motor runs and airflow begins. The control then sends power to an igniter, which glows. When it is hot enough, a gas valve with coils opens and gas flows to the burner, where the igniter lights it. A flame sensor or a thermal device confirms it, and the burner cycles on and off to hold the temperature. Gas comes in only when the igniter is ready, so a weak igniter means no valve opening, which means no flame.

The usual reasons a gas dryer does not ignite

A weak or broken igniter

Igniters wear out with heat. A tired igniter glows dimly, or glows and fades, and never reaches the point where the valve opens. You may hear the dryer click and then do nothing. This is among the most common reasons, but only a technician with the right tools should confirm it.

Gas valve coils or the valve itself

If the igniter is healthy but the valve will not open, the coils on the valve may have failed. A valve that opens partway can also cause a flame that lights and goes out. These parts belong to the gas system and are not an owner repair.

Gas supply

A gas valve at the wall that is partly closed, a recent move or plumbing job that shut the line, or an interruption in service can leave the dryer without fuel. Look at the shutoff valve behind the dryer. A handle parallel to the pipe usually means open, and across the pipe usually means closed. Do not touch the fitting itself.

Airflow and safety devices

A restricted vent heats the dryer faster than normal, and a thermal fuse or a high-limit device may open and shut the burner down. Codes like AF, F30, F4E3 and F4E5 describe restricted airflow and high limit conditions, and a dryer that has hit one may refuse to light until the cause is cleared. Clean the lint screen and look at the outside flap first.

Controls

The control that sends power to the igniter can fail, and the message may be something like F4 E1, which Maytag describes as a problem with the heater or heater relays. On a gas dryer the message may read differently from an electric one, which is why we ask for the model number.

Owner checks from outside

  1. Check the display and write down any code.
  2. Make sure the dryer is plugged in and that the outlet has power, since the drum and control still need electricity.
  3. Clean the lint screen and check the outside vent hood flap.
  4. Look at the gas shutoff valve handle position, without touching the pipe or fitting.
  5. Check whether the gas stove or water heater in the home also works. If nothing gas works, the problem is outside the dryer, and the utility or a plumber is the right call.
  6. Do one controlled power reset and try a short heated cycle.

What not to do

Do not disconnect the gas line, do not light a flame at the burner, and do not remove the burner cover. Do not run the dryer in a closed room if you smell gas. Do not bypass a safety device to make it run, and do not run a dryer that smells of burning or shows smoke. In that case switch it off at the breaker.

Gas dryers in Bay Area homes

Gas laundry hookups are common in older flats and houses, often in a closet with a rigid pipe and a short flexible connector. After a move or a painting job the dryer is pushed back, and the flexible line can kink or the valve handle get bumped. In a garage, the vent run and the gas line share a cold space, and dust gathers on the dryer faster. Landlords with gas dryers in several units should keep the shutoff valve accessible and the vent clean, since an ignition complaint is often traced to a shutoff that tenants cannot reach.

Model notes

The MGD7205RF is a gas Pet Pro top-load dryer, and the MGD7405RR as a smart top-load gas dryer with a Pet Pro option. When you contact us, give the model number, because gas dryers have their own parts and their own readings of the display. If you need help locating the label, see our guide on how to find a Maytag model number.

If the dryer ignites but dries slowly, see the article on a Maytag dryer that takes too long. For the broader no-heat picture, including electric dryers, read Maytag dryer not heating.

When to book

Book if the shutoff is open, the vent is clear and the dryer still does not light, if it clicks without heating or shows a heater or high-limit message. The technician diagnoses before repairing, gives a written estimate and does nothing without your approval. Read about the visit on the Maytag dryer repair page and see the Maytag dryers page for the lineup.
