About the MHW5500FW

The MHW5500FW is a Maytag front load washer in the Front Load series. Beyond that we do not assume anything about it: the label on your machine, not a general description, decides which parts and procedures apply. It is one of the Maytag washers we see across the Bay Area.

What goes wrong on a front load washer

A front load design asks more of its door, gasket and drain than a top loader does. These are the complaints that bring this type of washer to our schedule most often:

  • Water pooling on the floor in front of the machine after a cycle, usually pointing at the door gasket, the detergent drawer area or a drain hose connection.
  • A musty smell from the rubber seal or the drum, which tends to build when the door is kept shut between loads.
  • A cycle that stops with water still in the drum because the drain pump or its filter is blocked by a sock, coin or hair clip.
  • A door that will not open at the end of a cycle, or a cycle that will not begin because the latch is not detected as closed.

Where this model tends to be installed

Front loaders are often stacked or tucked into a hallway closet in San Francisco flats, with the drain running into a wall standpipe and the supply valves out of easy reach. Those hidden connections matter: a kinked drain hose behind a stacked pair can mimic a failing pump, and a half-closed supply valve can mimic a bad inlet valve. In garages across the avenues and the suburbs, the same washer sits on a concrete slab where a slow leak can go unnoticed for weeks.

Codes you may see

Write down any code before you power the washer off. A door fault such as F5 E1 or F5 E2 points at the latch circuit, F9 E1 describes a drain that takes too long, and F8 E1 describes a fill that takes too long. For the full list see Maytag washer error codes.

Checks you can make yourself

  • Confirm the washer has power, the outlet works and the door closes fully on the latch.
  • Check that the supply valves are open and the hoses are not pinched.
  • Look at the drain hose for a kink and wipe the gasket where it meets the glass.
  • Open the lower drain filter only if you can do so with a towel and bucket ready, and clear anything you see.

Stop the machine and shut off the supply valves if water is running onto the floor. If the smell is mostly stale water, our write-up on Maytag front load washer odor explains what a technician looks at.
